Steps to Apply, Get Approved and Spend ESA Funds

This user-friendly platform is designed to help you navigate the diverse landscape of Education Savings Accounts across different programs. As a parent, this tool will show you a an easy to understand outline on the steps you need to take in order to set up an ESA and how to access the funds.

From the list of state programs below, simply select the specific program you would like to explore. The results will show you a simplified overview of the steps to apply, get approved and spend ESA funds. Where available, we also provide links to applications and other resources.

With this tool, you can compare state programs, analyze program features, and make informed decisions.

INDIANA: Education Scholarship Account Program

  • APPLICATION AND APPROVAL: APPLICATION AND APPROVAL
  • Application And Approval Steps:
    • Step:

      Access "Education Scholarship Account Program, Treasurer of the State" during the open enrollment period, typically between March 1 and September 1 (p.6)

    • Step:

      Declare whether a parent or emancipated student

    • Step:

      Click "+ New Application"

    • Step:

      Add student information, including Student Test Number, date of birth, and a copy of the student’s birth certificate.

    • Step:

      Enter school information, including grade level and school your student is attending. You must also indicate that you are withdrawing your student from public school.

    • Step:

      Enter Parent/Guardian contact information.

    • Step:

      Declare relationship with applicant and provide relevant documents.

    • Step:

      Fill out household information and provide proof of residency and school district. You must use one of the following documents: tax return, utility or mortgage bill, current lease/rental agreement, driver's license, Indiana voter registration.

    • Step:

      Declare number of people in household. For expedited processing, you can provide your most recent 1040 tax form.

    • Step:

      Upload disability documentation.

    • Step:

      Select funding recipient. Funding will either be paid directly to the school or to the parent, in their student’s Education Scholarship Account.

    • Step:

      Sign agreement and submit.

    • Step:

      Click on "Provider Search" tab to find providers.

  • SPENDING ESA DOLLARS: SPENDING ESA DOLLARS
  • ESA dollars steps:
    • Step:

      After receiving approval, you will receive an email from ClassWallet to help set up an account. Creating an account will typically take 2-3 days after signing the agreement

    • Step:

      After receiving services, upload invoices given by providers to ClassWallet to initiate the payment process.

    • Step:

      Treasurer of State will email the account holder when funds are available (p.14)
